Holders Paris Saint-Germain fell 2-1 to Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, making their chances of direct qualification for the Champions League last-16 more difficult.

Luis Suarez scored twice for Sporting in the second half, sealing victory with a 90th-minute header after substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had equalised for PSG after 79 minutes.

The French club are fifth with 13 points. They face Newcastle next Wednesday in their last group stage fixture.

Gabriel Jesus pushed Arsenal into the last 16 of the Champions League with a double in Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Inter Milan which made the Gunners mathematically sure of a top-eight finish.

Two close-range finishes in the first half gave Arsenal a deserved seventh straight league phase win at the San Siro and manager Mikel Arteta a selection conundrum with Manchester United visiting the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Jesus started in place of summer signing Viktor Gyokeres, who has struggled this season but made sure of the win with a fine shot in the 84th minute, and the former Manchester City striker offered a threat all game.

The 28-year-old had only started twice this season before Tuesday’s win but appears to be back to his best after coming back from a cruciate ligament tear which kept him out of action for nearly a year.

Arsenal are now on 21 points and were effectively in the last 16 before kick-off as 16 points was enough to be in the top eight last season.

But the 28-year-old was key to Arsenal going six points clear at the top of the classification ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich’s home fixture with Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday night.

Inter, who levelled through a fabulous Petar Sucic strike in the 18th minute, sit eighth after losing a third straight match in Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in their history.

The Serie A leaders look set to drop out of the top eight on Wednesday with five teams that can overtake them, and their maximum possible points tally of 15 — should they win at Borussia Dortmund next week — makes a playoff spot likely.

More worryingly it was another big game defeat for Cristian Chivu’s team who have struggled in high-profile contests and were sloppy for both of Jesus’ goals.

Arsenal looked like they would stroll to victory when Jesus poked home the Gunners’ opener in the 10th minute, the Brazilian pouncing on Jurrien Timber’s mishit shot to score his first Champions League goal November 2023.

But his goal was quickly cancelled out by Sucic’s thumping drive as Inter abandoned their initial cautious strategy and began to cause Arsenal problems.

Sucic spurned a perfect chance to unleash another shot in the 27th minute when sent charging through by Lautaro Martinez, but he dawdled and then played a poor pass to Marcus Thuram who slashed his effort high and wide.

Inter were punished for spurning that opportunity four minutes later by Jesus, who was left completely unmarked near the goalline for one of Arsenal’s special set-piece routines.

Bukayo Saka’s deep, looping corner was headed back onto the crossbar by Leandro Trossard and the ball fell straight to Jesus who made no mistake.

Inter didn’t roll over, with Federico Dimarco and substitute Pio Esposito both going close with angled drives, but Gyokeres struck on the break to seal the deal and allow fans to look ahead to United.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded the arrest of 77,792 drug offenders and seized 14,847 kilograms of illicit drugs over the past five years, the agency’s Chairman, Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, has said.

Marwa made the disclosure during an award and commendation ceremony for some NDLEA personnel at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the seizures dealt a major blow to both local and international drug trafficking networks, sending a strong signal that Nigeria will no longer tolerate illicit drug operations.

According to him, among those arrested in the last five years were 128 identified drug barons, underscoring the scale of NDLEA’s enforcement operations.

He noted that the agency achieved 14,225 convictions during the period, sending a clear message about the consequences of engaging in drug-related activities.

“It is therefore heartwarming to note that in the last five years, we recorded significant operational successes, including the arrest of 77,792 drug offenders, including 128 identified drug barons who were central to major trafficking networks,” he said.

“We seized a total of 14,847,000 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs, thereby significantly disrupting both local and transnational supply chains.

“In further strengthening the criminal justice response to drug offences, the agency successfully prosecuted and secured convictions against 14,225 offenders, reinforcing deterrence and affirming that drug crime attracts consequences.”

Marwa highlighted that the NDLEA also focused on curbing drug demand, with 32,442 individuals benefiting from its counselling, treatment, and rehabilitation programmes across Nigeria.

He added that the agency carried out 13,735 sensitisation activities under its War Against Drug Abuse campaign, targeting schools, markets, motor parks, workplaces, places of worship, and communities to raise awareness and prevent substance abuse.

He also pledged to sustain efforts to bring all drug barons to justice, intercept traffickers, and eliminate illicit drugs from Nigerian streets, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to fighting drug-related crimes.

A former spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has predicted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may suffer internal crisis and defections after its convention ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing a clash of interests within the party.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is likely to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate, a development he believes could trigger a mass exodus of members.

According to him, several interests within the party would feel sidelined if Atiku secures the ticket.

“ADC will bleed after its convention because almost certainly Vice President Atiku Abubakar will get the ticket. When he does, some people will walk out,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He noted that the ADC currently hosts several high-profile political figures whose competing interests are likely to clash once the party begins selecting its presidential candidate.

Baba-Ahmed also commented on former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, suggesting that his political approach may not be compatible with the dynamics of a competitive party primary.

“One of the reasons Peter Obi is saying, ‘Look at me, I’m not here for number two, I’m not here for convention, I’m here to fly the flag,’ is that he has people who were initially whispering politely to him,” Baba-Ahmed said. “But now they are telling him, ‘Join the queue. You’re not the only one with ambition here.’”

He added that Obi is used to being adopted as a consensus candidate rather than competing against multiple aspirants.

“Peter Obi doesn’t participate in convention; he goes there to be anointed,” Baba-Ahmed said, noting that such expectations could create tensions within the ADC.

An armed attack has killed at least 31 civilians in western Niger near the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali in a region rife with jihadist groups, local sources said Tuesday.

The assailants struck on Sunday in a village lying in the Tillaberi region, located in the tri-border area — a flashpoint zone where the frontiers of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali converge.

Jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group have made the region a fiefdom, carrying out deadly attacks for nearly a decade.

Tillaberi became the “deadliest region across central Sahel” in 2025, with more than 1,200 deaths, most of them civilians, according to ACLED, an NGO that monitors conflicts.

“On Sunday, armed individuals killed 31 of our residents in Bosiye; 30 died on the spot, and one of the five wounded succumbed at a health centre,” a resident told AFP.

A local student union also confirmed the toll in a statement, saying it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by “this odious and barbaric act”.

In September, the mayor of Gorouol, the local area where Bosiye is located, who had been appointed by the military authorities, was killed in an ambush.

A week earlier, armed men on motorcycles had killed 22 villagers in Takoubatt, also in Tillaberi.

Niger’s military leaders, who came to power in a 2023 coup, have struggled to contain jihadist groups in Tillaberi, despite maintaining a large army presence in the region.

According to ACLED, jihadist violence killed nearly 2,000 people in 2025 in Niger.

Human Rights Watch said in September that the Islamic State group had “summarily executed” more than 127 villagers and Muslim worshippers in Tillaberi in five attacks since March.

Niger also faces Islamist militant violence in the southeast from Boko Haram and its rival militant group ISWAP.

The coup in Niger — which overthrew the democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum — has seen the new military leadership move closer to its two neighbours and force out French and US forces who had been helping to combat the jihadists.

Niger and its junta-led neighbours Burkina Faso and Mali have teamed up to create their own confederation, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and have announced the creation of a 5,000-strong force for joint military operations.

No fewer than five soldiers and a police inspector were killed on Monday when suspected bandits ambushed security personnel in Zamfara State.

Channels Television gathered that the victims, who were attached to Operation Fansan Yamma, were on pass and travelling from Bingi–Kwatarkwashi to Gusau when the attack occurred.

A top security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the incident.

According to the source, the security personnel were ambushed by armed bandits at Kekun village, along the Kwatarkwashi axis in Bungudu Local Government Area of the state.

The police officer, identified as Inspector Ibrahim, and the five soldiers were reportedly shot dead during the attack, while several other personnel sustained gunshot injuries.

The injured officers, alongside the bodies of the deceased, were taken to Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau, where the wounded are currently receiving treatment and the corpses deposited at the hospital morgue.

The Military has confirmed the ambush in a statement released by Media information Officer, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Captain David Adewusi, on Tuesday.

He said the ambush followed a series of successful offensive operations conducted from 17 to 19 January 2026 by the troops of Sector 2 OPFY, in conjunction with the OPFY Mobile Strike Team and DIA Tactical Support Team.

“During these operations, three suspects—Isiya Kwakwatawa, Ibrahim Dan Musulu, and Makau Lamba Goma—were arrested, while four terrorists were neutralised and others fled into the forest. Items recovered included 1 PKT machine gun, 5 AK-47 rifles, 3 Ak 47 magazines, other items are rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, Baofeng radios,3 motorcycles.

“While returning from these operations and responding to a distress call on terrorist reprisal attack , troops of OPFY Combat Team 1, came under attack by terrorists at Gidan Wagni while en route to Kekun Waje.

“Despite the surprise of the ambush, the troops responded gallantly, engaging the terrorists and preventing further harm to nearby communities. Regrettably, five soldiers and one police officer paid the supreme sacrifice during the encounter,” the statement said.

An APC chieftain, Biodun Ajiboye, has dismissed claims that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi would mount serious pressure to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, saying Obi no longer commands the level of support he enjoyed in 2023.

Ajiboye, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, said Obi no longer has firm control of the South-East region as he did during the 2023 elections.

The APC chieftain also maintained that both Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who together polled over 12 million votes in 2023, would not pose a threat to President Tinubu’s re-election even if they form an alliance ahead of the 2027 polls.
