Kylian Mbappe struck twice against his former side Monaco as Real Madrid romped to an emphatic 6-1 Champions League victory on Tuesday to ease tensions around the club.

Vinicius Junior, who was jeered by his own fans during a home win over Levante last weekend, also shone and scored a brilliant goal himself as Madrid strengthened their bid to claim a top eight finish in the league phase.

New coach Alvaro Arbeloa secured a second win at the helm after replacing Xabi Alonso last week, with his team producing a dazzling attacking display.

Jude Bellingham and Franco Mastantuono were also on target for Los Blancos and Thilo Kehrer bundled a Vinicius cross into his own net as Madrid delivered arguably their best performance of the season.

Mbappe has been in superb form even when Madrid have struggled and stretched his lead at the top of the European goalscoring charts with his 10th and 11th goals to give his team a commanding lead.

After missing the Copa del Rey humiliation by Albacete in Arbeloa’s disastrous first game, Mbappe has netted in the next two matches.

It took just five minutes for the French superstar to open the scoring, slotting home lethally from just inside the area after Fede Valverde knocked on Mastantuono’s cut-back.

After celebrating with his team-mates Mbappe apologised to the visiting supporters, having first emerged into the world’s spotlight while at Monaco.

Ansu Fati, on loan at Monaco from Madrid’s rivals Barcelona, came close before Arbeloa’s side struck again.

They launched a devastating counter-attack, with Eduardo Camavinga’s clever flick to Arda Guler sparking the move. Guler found Vinicius, who span the ball across for Mbappe, just onside, to tuck home.

Despite being shredded defensively Monaco offered some attacking threat and Jordan Teze hit the crossbar with a well-guided long range effort.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also made a couple of solid saves before the break, with Madrid’s third coming shortly after the action resumed.

Vinicius, heavily involved, unselfishly teed up former River Plate playmaker Mastantuono, who swept home.

After 55 minutes Madrid had four, with Kehrer turning Vinicius’s raking low cross into his own net as Monaco crumbled.

Arbeloa has only had words of praise for Vinicius since taking over and the forward rewarded his coach with a hug after ramming in the fifth.

Vinicius fired into the top corner past helpless goalkeeper Philipp Kohn for only his second goal in his last 19 matches for the club.

There were a few boos for him at the start but they dried up fast as Vinicius reminded Madrid’s fans how good he can be.

Teze pulled one back for Monaco after a mistake by Dani Ceballos, before Madrid struck again to round off the rout.

Bellingham wrapped things up, rounding the goalkeeper to net in the 80th minute after Dean Huijsen cleverly dummied Valverde’s pass.

Manchester City suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday as the Norwegian minnows caused one of the biggest shocks in Champions League history.

Pep Guardiola’s side were blown away by Kasper Hogh’s first half brace and a second half strike from Jens Petter Hauge at the ecstatic Aspmyra Stadion.Rayan Cherki got one back moments after Hauge’s goal, but Rodri’s dismissal for two bookings left City in tatters as Bodo/Glimt celebrated their first ever win in the Champions League group phase. In a fishing town situated 200km north of the Arctic Circle, the 2023 European champions were caught cold in freezing temperatures of minus two degrees.

Bodo’s entire population of only 55,000 people could almost fit into City’s Etihad Stadium.

But Kjetil Knutsen’s underdogs ignored the huge financial and talent gap between the clubs to inflict a chastening defeat on the Premier League giants.

Bodo/Glimt, who hadn’t played since December after the end of the Norwegian season, reached the Europa League semi-finals last term, an impressive run that maintained their remarkable rise over the last decade.

READ ALSO: Man City Beat Madrid In Champions League As Pressure Mounts On AlonsoIn their first ever season in the Champions League group phase, Bodo/Glimt had already earned creditable draws against Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham.City failed to heed the warning, playing with a lack of urgency in the face of Bodo/Glimt’s relentless pressing.

They travelled to Norway earlier than Guardiola’s usual schedule to ensure his players were able to practise on Bodo/Glimt’s artificial pitch.

Yet they were totally out of sync in the latest disjointed display in an increasingly troubled season.

City are without a win in their last four Premier League matches, with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United leaving them seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola will be alarmed by City’s second successive tame surrender, which exposed the Spainard’s claim that his players had rediscovered their hunger after finishing without a trophy last season.

The City boss had said he planned to enjoy the Northern Lights from his hotel before the match, but that will be his only fond memory from one of the most embarrassing losses of his glittering career.

City’s final group phase fixture is at home to Galatasaray on January 28 as they try to seal an automatic place in the last 16 via a top-eight finish.

Sloppy City

Bodo/Glimt took a shock lead in the 22nd minute.

It was a shambolic goal to concede, underlining the defensive issues that convinced Guardiola to sign England centre-back Marc Guehi.

Max Alleyne, who was playing on loan at second tier Watford earlier this season, showed his lack of experience, failing to deal with a high ball over the top.

Ole Didrik Blomberg pounced on the blunder, lofting a cross to the far post, where Hogh was left unmarked to guide his header through the legs of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, City paid the price for another Alleyne mistake just two minutes later.

With City’s defence out of position after Alleyne was caught out by a high bounce, Blomberg’s cross picked out Hogh, who was left completely unmarked to slot a cool finish past Donnarumma.

City striker Erling Haaland once again laboured for long periods and has now scored just once in eight games in all competitions after wasting two good chances late in the first half.

There was no improvement from City after the break and Bodo/Glimt delivered the knockout blow in the 58th minute.

Rodri lost possession and Hauge curled a brilliant finish into the top corner from long-range.

Cherki netted two minutes later with a clinical finish from the edge of the area.

But City’s misery was compounded in the 62nd minute when Rodri was dismissed for fouls on Evjen and Blomberg in the space of just 54 seconds.

The opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics will be less “divisive” than that of Paris, which drew criticism from conservative circles, its creative director Marco Balich said Tuesday.

The February 6 ceremony, which is expected to attract billions of viewers,” is a unique platform for conveying positive messages, not divisive ones,” the Italian artistic director said during an online press conference.

“I don’t like making divisive statements.”

The opening ceremony of the Winter Games — which run through February 22 — is to be held simultaneously at four venues, including Milan’s San Siro football stadium, and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, and Predazzo, which will host the skiing and snowboarding events.

Numerous artists and 1,200 Olympic volunteers are expected to participate in front of many celebrities and government officials, including US Vice President JD Vance.

The ceremony will first celebrate the beauty of Italy, with singer Andrea Boccelli and American pop star Mariah Carey singing in Italian.

It will then celebrate sport and the values of peace, “the harmony of cultures, religions and peoples that we need more than ever,” said Balich, who helmed the ceremonies at the 2006 Turin Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

During the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, a scene featuring drag queens was criticised around the world by religious authorities including the Vatican and conservative politicians, who saw it as an inappropriate reference to the Last Supper, Christ’s final meal.

“Some nations prefer to convey different messages,” Balich pointed out in response to a question about the Paris Olympics.

“I try to celebrate the values of humanity, I see the glass as half full, I am optimistic by nature,” he added.

Milan will be reviving one of the innovations of the Paris Games, however, namely its Olympic cauldron, which attracted crowds in front of the Louvre.

Under the Arch of Peace, in the heart of Milan, the fountain will be animated every hour between 5-11 pm from February 7-22, then again from March 6-15 for the Paralympic Games.

“I expect it to go viral — it’s our nod to social media,” Balich said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday he was worried US President Donald Trump’s push to take Greenland could be diverting focus away from Russia’s invasion, now approaching its four-year mark.

Trump last week threatened European nations with tariffs of up to 25 percent for opposing his plans to acquire Greenland, drawing anger from Brussels and putting the NATO military alliance under unprecedented strain.

Ukraine, which is currently battling a wave of Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure, is keen to avoid a dispute that could fracture unity among its Western allies.

“I’m worried about any loss of focus during a full-scale war,” Zelensky told reporters.

He added that the dispute surrounding Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, and the Ukraine war should not be seen as “interchangeable”.

“We have a full-scale war, we have a specific aggressor, and we have specific victims,” he said.

He also called for Washington to engage in diplomacy with Europe.

“I want very, very much America to hear Europe, to truly hear it in the format of diplomacy. I think that’s what will happen and I strongly believe there won’t be any major threats,” he said.

Spain’s king and queen visited Tuesday the site of the collision of two high-speed trains that killed at least 41 people as the country began three days of national mourning.

The country’s deadliest rail accident in over a decade took place late Sunday when a train operated by rail company Iryo, travelling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz in the southern Andalusia region.

It crossed on to the other track, where it crashed into an oncoming train, which also derailed.

The death toll rose to 41 after the body of a passenger was recovered on Monday evening from one of the Iryo train carriages, the regional government said.

Over 120 people were injured, with 39 still in hospital, including four children, it added.

Dressed in dark clothing, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia shook hands with emergency services workers near the spot where the mangled wreckage of the two trains remains.

The royal couple were scheduled to visit injured passengers later on Tuesday at a hospital in the nearby city of Cordoba.

Santiago Salvador, a Portuguese national who broke a leg in the accident, said he felt lucky to be alive.

“I was thrown through the carriage, it felt like being on a carousel,” Salvador, his face covered in cuts,  told Portuguese state television RTP.

“It was a very tragic accident; it looked like hell. There were people who were very seriously injured.”

Broken Rail

Heavy machinery was deployed on Monday to lift the most severely damaged train carriages and give rescuers better access.

The head of Andalusia’s regional government, Juan Manuel Moreno, had warned it could take another until Wednesday “to know with certainty how many deaths have resulted from this terrible accident”.

It was Spain’s deadliest train accident since 2013, when 80 people died after a train veered off a curved section of track outside the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela.

Flags flew at half-mast on public buildings, television anchors wore black, and cabinet ministers curtailed public appearances as Spain observed the first of three days of national mourning.

During a visit to Adamuz on Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez vowed a full and transparent investigation into the cause of the accident.

Unlike the 2013 accident, the derailment occurred on a straight section of track, and the trains were travelling within the speed limit, officials said.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente said investigators must determine whether a broken section of rail, visible in media photos, was “the cause or the result” of the derailment of the Iryo train that led to the collision.

He said the Iryo train was “practically new” and the section of the track where the disaster happened had been recently renovated, making the accident “extremely strange”.

Sabotage Ruled Out

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said “the possibility of sabotage was never considered.”

“There has never been any element suggesting otherwise,” he told a press conference following a weekly cabinet meeting.

Human error has “been practically ruled out”, Renfe President Alvaro Fernandez Heredia told Spanish public radio RNE on Monday.

Heredia also ruled out speeding as a cause. He said both trains were travelling just over 200 kilometres (120 miles) per hour, below the 250-kilometre-per-hour limit for that section of track.

“It must be related to Iryo’s rolling stock or an infrastructure issue,” he said.

Opened in 1992, Spain’s high-speed rail network is the second largest in the world, after China.

Private operators began running passenger trains in 2021 following the liberalisation of the rail sector, ending the decades-long monopoly of state operator Renfe.

Since then, passenger numbers on some routes have grown noticeably.

The UK government said on Tuesday its deal to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius “secures” the future of a key US-UK military base on the Indian Ocean archipelago, after US President Donald Trump accused Britain of “great stupidity”.

The US president’s comments mark a major change of position for Trump, who previously endorsed the deal when it was signed in May 2025.

“The UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform earlier on Tuesday.

The harsh comments follow Trump’s threat to slap tariffs on Britain and other European countries for defending Greenland’s sovereignty from Washington.

The Chagos agreement will see Britain hand the archipelago to its former colony and pay to lease a key US-UK military base on Diego Garcia, the largest island, for a century.

“This deal secures the operations of the joint US-UK base on Diego Garcia for generations, with robust provisions for keeping its unique capabilities intact and our adversaries out,” Downing Street said in response to Trump’s criticism.

“It has been publicly welcomed by the US, Australia and all other Five Eyes allies, as well as key international partners including India, Japan and South Korea,” a government spokesperson added.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said in May that Washington “welcomes the historic agreement”.

“The Trump Administration determined that this agreement secures the long-term, stable, and effective operation of the joint US-UK military facility at Diego Garcia,” Rubio said in a statement at the time.

‘Can’t Reverse The Clock’

“The treaty has been signed with the Mauritian government. So I can’t reverse the clock on that,” UK cabinet minister Darren Jones told Times Radio.

He added that the deal was in the final stages of going through parliament.

The UK kept control of the Chagos Islands after Mauritius gained independence from Britain in the 1960s.

But it evicted thousands of Chagos islanders, who have since mounted a series of legal claims for compensation in British courts.

In 2019, the International Court of Justice recommended that Britain hand the archipelago to Mauritius after decades of legal battles.

Challenges in international and domestic courts had left the status of the military base “under threat”, according to the UK government.

Opposition politicians in the UK have been critical of the deal, which would see Britain pay Mauritius £101 million ($136 million) annually for 99 years to lease Diego Garcia.

The net cost over the length of the lease would be around £3.4 billion if inflation was factored in, according to the government.

Kemi Badenoch, leader of the opposition Conservative party,  said: “Unfortunately on this issue President Trump is right.”

“Thank goodness Trump has vetoed the surrender of the Chagos islands,” said Nigel Farage, the populist leader of the hard-right Reform UK party.

But Ed Davey, leader of the centrist Liberal Democrat party, said Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer should begin to stand up to the US leader.

“This shows Starmer’s approach to Trump has failed. The Chagos Deal was sold as proof the government could work with him. Now it’s falling apart. It’s time for the government to stand up to Trump; appeasing a bully never works.”

Burkina Faso’s former transitional president and the alleged mastermind behind various coup plots in the country was arrested in neighbouring Togo and expelled, sources close to the case said Monday.

Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was arrested last week in Lome and tried for “attempted destabilisation” in Burkina Faso before being taken to the airport, one of his associates said.

A regional security source and a Togolese source close to the case confirmed this information.

His destination was unknown but some sources mentioned a likely expulsion to Burkina Faso.

Authorities in Ouagadougou had yet to comment on the matter as of late Monday.

The former lieutenant-colonel ousted president Roch Marc Christian Kabore in a January 2022 coup.

But he was himself deposed eight months later in the coup that brought military leader Captain Ibrahim Traore to power.

Burkina Faso’s military junta has accused Damiba of planning several coup plots and assassination attempts against Traore since then.

Earlier this month, it said Damiba and his co-conspirators had planned a series of “targeted assassinations” of civilian and military authorities on January 3, “starting with the neutralisation of comrade Ibrahim Traore”.

Canada will not pay to be on US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace”, a government source told AFP Monday, after Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated he would accept an invitation to join the body.

“Canada will not pay for a seat on the board, nor has that been requested of Canada at this time,” the government source said.

The board was originally conceived to oversee the rebuilding of Gaza, but its charter does not appear to limit its role to the occupied Palestinian territory.

Member countries — represented on the board by their head of state or government — would be allowed to join for three years or longer if they paid more than $1.0 billion in cash within the first year, the charter says.

A minibus carrying students to school collided with a truck south of Johannesburg on Monday, killing 13 pupils, South African police said.

It was the latest in a string of deadly crashes in a country whose modern road network is undermined by rampant speeding, reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles.

The crash happened near the industrial city of Vanderbijlpark, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) south of Johannesburg.

Police said the driver of the minibus appeared to have lost control while attempting to overtake other vehicles.

The toll rose to 13 after an injured child died of their injuries, the provincial education department said in a statement. Several children were also badly hurt.

Authorities did not immediately release the ages of the children but provincial education minister Matome Chiloane said they were from primary schools, where pupils are aged from six years, and also high schools.

Images on social media showed the crushed minibus on the roadside with distraught parents gathered behind the police tape. Some broke down wailing when they were allowed to see the bodies.

“It is a terrible scene,” Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi said.

In a statement of condolence, President Cyril Ramaphosa said everything must be done to enforce the rules of the road and ensure the quality of school transport services in order to protect learners, “the nation’s most precious assets”.

Many South African parents have to rely on private minibuses to get their children to school because of limited public transportation.

At least five students were killed and eight others injured in September when a school minibus ploughed into a creche in a KwaZulu-Natal township.

In July 2024, 11 children — some as young as seven and eight — were killed when a minibus taking them to school near Johannesburg overturned and caught fire after being hit by another vehicle.

More than 11,400 lives were lost on South African roads in 2025, according to the latest data from the transport ministry.
