Mohamed Salah made his much-anticipated return to Liverpool training on Tuesday following the Africa Cup of Nations as the club prepare for their Champions League match against Marseille.

The Egypt forward was put through his paces during a gentle workout with the rest of the squad at the club’s training centre.

Salah’s return has been a major talking point after he took aim at Liverpool in an explosive interview early last month.

He accused the club of throwing him “under the bus” after he was benched for three games in a row and said he had no relationship with manager Arne Slot.

But he appeared as a substitute in a 2-0 Premier League win against Brighton on December 13, providing a assist, and Slot subsequently said the club had moved on from the furore.

Last week Slot said he was “happy” Salah would be returning, refusing to divulge the content of his conversations with the 33-year-old.

The Liverpool boss said he was unsure whether the forward would face Marseille in France on Wednesday.

Liverpool are currently ninth in the league phase of the Champions League.

The top eight qualify automatically for the last 16 while teams placed from ninth to 24th face a play-off round.

Salah scored 29 league goals to win the Premier League Golden Boot last season as Liverpool romped to a 20th English league title, but has managed just four goals during the current campaign.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

His arrest, according to sources in the secret police, borders on fresh allegations of terrorism financing.

Security sources say Malami, who is standing trial before a Federal High Court on allegations of money laundering, was on Monday taken into custody by security operatives shortly after his release from the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

The source disclosed that DSS operatives picked him up immediately after he exited the facility.

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed that Malami was released after perfecting his bail conditions.

Efforts to obtain official comments from the DSS remained unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The release of the former AGF followed the granting of bail on January 7, 2026, by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The court granted bail to Malami, his wife, and his son for ₦500 million each, with strict conditions.

Each defendant was required to produce two sureties with verifiable landed property within Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarimpa, deposit property documents with the court, and submit affidavits of means.

They were also ordered to surrender their international passports and barred from travelling abroad without prior permission.

Malami, his wife Asabe, and his son had been remanded at Kuje following their arraignment by the EFCC on December 29, 2025, on 16 counts, bordering on money laundering involving about ₦8.7bn.

The EFCC alleged that the defendants used multiple corporate entities, bank accounts, and high-value real estate transactions to conceal proceeds of unlawful activities.

‘Alleged Bias’

Amid his running battle with the anti-graft agency, Malama had accused the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede,  from all matters relating to him, citing alleged bias and conflict of interest.

Malami in a statement by his media aide, Mohammed Bello, also called for the immediate recusal, citing conflict of interest.

He argued that the EFCC chairman’s continued involvement is “legally untenable, morally indefensible, and constitutionally impermissible,” referencing Chapter 9 of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report.

According to the statement, Malami, while serving as Attorney-General, supervised the establishment of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations of corruption and abuse of office within the EFCC. It noted that the current EFCC chairman served as secretary to the commission at the time.

The statement said Chapter 9 of the Salami Report addressed the conduct and responsibilities of senior EFCC officials and created what it described as “personal and professional exposure” for certain individuals now exercising prosecutorial authority over Malami.

Responding, the EFCC boss says its operations are not targeted at members of the opposition, but it is handling cases irrespective of political parties.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, said this in an exclusive interview with Channels Television, saying the agency’s investigation of a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, is not politically-related.

“Let me tell you about that particular former attorney-general that you are talking about — there is nothing personal in this matter. If Nigeria is to move forward, all of us must agree that this fight must be fought without being partisan, and that’s what I want Nigerians to understand and to agree with us,” Olukayode said in the interview aired on Sunday Politics on January 11.

“So now I want to tell Nigerians that the investigation of this man predated me in office, and a lot of people don’t know that. Yes, I edited the investigation file. What I did was to ensure that the investigation was carried out in a very professional and thorough manner.”

Good worth millions of naira have been destroyed following a fire outbreak on a storey commercial building on Somoye Osundairo Street in Computer Village, Ikeja area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said that the incident happened about 1:55 a.m on Tuesday, prompting the immediate activation of the state’s emergency response plan from its Command and Control Centre in Alausa.

“Upon arrival of the LASEMA Response Team at the incident scene, it was observed that a fire outbreak had occurred in a one-storey commercial building accommodating dealers in computers and accessories in Computer Village, Ikeja.

“Responders observed active flames and dense smoke, indicating intense combustion within the structure. The high volume of combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of fire,” the statement issued on Tuesday morning, read in part.

While no fatalities were reported, with some firefighters getting minor injuries, LASEMA said the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained and was currently under investigation.

Providing more details about the incident, the agency explained that the entire upper floor of the building was completely razed by the fire. All goods and properties stored there were destroyed, while the structure had been partially compromised and would require immediate assessment, it said.

It explained that its response team conducted a risk assessment, cordoned off the affected area, and coordinated a multi-agency response involving the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, and the Nigeria Police Force to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.

“All goods and properties worth millions of naira stored therein were totally destroyed by the conflagration.

“Firefighting operations have successfully suppressed and contained the fire within the affected building, preventing escalation to neighbouring structures,” the agency said, adding that damping-down operations were ongoing to prevent re-ignition.

In a post via its X handle on Tuesday, the NYSC said, “corps members must undertake their journeys only during the daytime, warning against night travel due to increased security and road safety risks.

“Prospective corps members are encouraged to use registered transport companies and approved motor parks to reduce exposure to unsafe travel conditions.”

The Corps also called on travellers to share their live location with family members or trusted contacts throughout their journey, noting that this could be helpful in emergencies.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have cleared several terrorist camps and recovered equipment belonging to the insurgents in Borno State.

Disclosing this in a statement on Monday, spokesman of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai, Sani Uba, said the troops recorded further operational successes in the ongoing Operation Desert Sanity.

According to him, at about midday, the advancing troops came under armed drone attacks by the terrorists, adding that they, however, maintained momentum and continued the offensive.

A second attempt, according to him, was in the evening, when the troops also decisively repelled, forcing the terrorists to withdraw.

Uba, a lieutenant-colonel, said troops also repelled coordinated attacks by the insurgents in the Timbuktu Triangle.

“On Sunday, 18 January 2026, troops advanced from their harbour area and conducted deliberate, intelligence-led operations across several identified terrorist enclaves, including Chilaria, Garin Faruk and Abirma,” he said.

“The operation was supported by the Air Component of OPHK, which provided persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) coverage over the axis. The air-to-ground synergy enabled real-time tracking of terrorist movement, deterred adversary reinforcement, and enhanced the precision and confidence of ground operations,” the statement reads in part.

During the operation, troops recovered several items of military significance, including Baofeng radios, phones, 5 x AK-47 magazines, several rounds of 7.62 × 39mm special ammunition, and 7.62mm NATO belted ammunition, the statement noted.

Other items recovered include several Boko Haram/ISWAP flags, links of 12.7 × 108 mm ammunition, diesel-powered grinding machines, large quantity of medical supplies, several bags of grains, pickup truck, underground logistics storage, and a Petroleum and Oil Lubricant (POL) dump, which all further degraded the operational and logistical capability of the terrorists.

Uba stated that the troops remain resolute in their mission to eliminate terrorist threats, protect civilians, and restore lasting peace and stability to the North East.
