Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has said that his administration is aware of some non-governmental organisations taking advantage of the demolition exercise in the Makoko area of the state.

The governor, who stated this while addressing journalists, said the NGOs, both local and international, were out to profit from the issues that have emanated from the demolition.

“We are aware that there are some local and international NGOs that want to profit from this. We’re studying, and we’re going to show you evidence,” the governor said.

“They’ve made so much money from international people. And that they’ve asked for so many grants and wealth into those places, and it’s just for them to cover their own lies and the fact that they’ve not done what they said they were going to be doing.

“That’s why they’re all shouting and crying more than the bereaved. And we’re here to face them and to let them see the reasons why we have to do what we’re doing,” he added.

“There have been several, you know, issues and stories here and there on what we’re doing. They mention that we’re doing Makoko and the rest of it,” he added.

He said the state government took the decision “for the overall safety of the citizens”, adding that many of the inhabitants erected buildings under high-tension cable.

“Of what interest will it be for the government to want to unduly demolish anybody’s what, what interest if it is not for the overall safety of the citizens that we’re talking about.

“A lot of these people have built the shanties right under the high-tension wires,” he said.

“And so we cannot be a lawless state of people. Something has to give at some point because we cannot fold our arms and let calamity or disaster happen,” Sanwo-Olu added.

In September 2025, the Lagos State Government announced plans to remove illegal structures built under high-tension cables in the Makoko community, Yaba, Lagos.

The Makoko area is divided between land-based and waterfront areas, which comprise rows of shanties, built on the Lagos lagoon one of the world’s largest cities with an estimated population of over 15 million.

The Super Eagles have soared to the 26th spot in the latest FIFA World Ranking, released on Monday by the football governing body.

The ranking, disclosed on FIFA’s website on Monday, marks a remarkable 12-place jump.

The Eagles also recorded a +79.09 points gain.

Nigeria’s rise from 38th followed the team’s remarkable campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Super Eagles finished third after edging the Pharaohs of Egypt last Saturday.

The Eric Chelle side ran a campaign, considered by many as excellent, showing coordination and teamwork.

Nigeria lost only one of their seven matches, following a semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout.

But a third-place finish gave the Eagles consolation.

Meanwhile, the top 10 in the latest FIFA ranking are the regulars.

They are Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, and Germany.

In Africa, the top 10 countries are Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tunisia, Congo DR, and Mali.

Nigeria’s rise on the global football stage has become impossible to ignore, and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations stands as a vivid testament to that ascent.

Their performance did more than elevate Nigeria’s standing at AFCON; it showcased a team that has evolved into a powerhouse of African football, blending homegrown grit with global experience and capturing the attention of football fans worldwide.

The Federal Government has praised the Super Eagles for their fighting spirit and commendable showing at the Africa Cup of Nations.

It said the Super Eagles’ performance reflected discipline, unity and resilience, values he noted resonate strongly with the Nigerian spirit.

“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad.

“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high. Learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger,” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged residents of the state to prioritise their safety.

The governor spoke in reaction to a viral video showing some residents scooping diesel from a 33-litre tanker that fell on the Liverpool Bridge in the Apapa area of the state.

READ ALSOTwo Dead In Lagos Tanker Explosion

The incident sparked panic as the petroleum product gushed out of the fallen tanker.

“We had to push our first responders to be able to cordon off the place. If anything had happened, it’s not what we’re talking about that we would have seen this morning.

“You see, people need to understand that it is a big city we’re dealing with, and emergencies and safety of life and property are still the paramount thing that we need to safeguard,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, saw residents of the area scooping the inflammable contents without considering the associated risks.

Disclosing this in a statement via X, the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) said traffic was diverted to the other side of the bridge for safety measures.

According to the statement, emergency officials, including operatives of the Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and LASTMA, were also on the ground to avert a tragedy.

“Their presence is to prevent fire outbreaks, evacuation of the truck, and free flow of traffic”, the statement added.

According to a video posted by LASTMA, Nigerians were seen gathering several jerrycans and buckets to gather as much diesel as possible.

There was also no incident of fire outbreak at the scene.

“The road on Liverpool bridge inward Apapa that was cordoned off has been reopened after the contents have been neutralised by men of Lagos State Fire Service,” it stated.

“LASTMA officials are doing the needful, and traffic is expected to move better while we await the arrival of a tow truck. Men of the Lagos State Fire Service and rescue team are on the ground doing the needful.

“Pending the time of the recovery, the Liverpool bridge has been cordoned off, and the counter-flow method of traffic control is in use. Vehicular movement along the corridor is very slow,” the agency stated earlier.

Tanker Explosions

There were two major explosions in Nigeria in 2025 involving people scooping petroleum products.

In January 2025, a petrol tanker overturned and spilt fuel in Suleja, Niger State.

As local residents gathered to collect the fuel, the tanker exploded, killing at least 86 people and injuring dozens more.

In October 2025, a fuel tanker exploded while residents were scooping fuel from it in Katcha, also in Niger State, killing dozens of people.

Initial reporting cited at least 30 dead and about 40 injured, and later updates confirmed the death toll had risen to at least 42 victims, with many others burned and hospitalised.

These tragedies underscore the ongoing risk of fuel-related accidents and the persistent challenge of public safety around tanker crashes.

Nigeria House In Davos

The 2026 WEF marks a milestone in Nigeria’s global economic diplomacy with the official debut of “Nigeria House Davos.”

For the first time, the Federal Government has established a dedicated sovereign pavilion on the Davos Promenade.

This facility, a product of a successful Public-Private Partnership (PPP), will serve as a permanent hub for high-level ministerial engagements, investment roundtables, and cultural diplomacy throughout the week.

Vice President Shettima will present Nigeria’s 2026 economic outlook to the world’s most influential political and business leaders as he participates in key plenary sessions focusing on the responsible deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and biotechnology.

Throughout the week, the Vice President will hold bilateral meetings with heads of state, top executives from multinational corporations, and leaders of international development finance institutions to deepen partnerships that align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration of President Tinubu.

In an interview with journalists shortly after the VP’s arrival, Oduwole said Nigeria would make a robust presentation of investment opportunities in the country at the launch of the Nigeria House in Davos which will focus on President Tinubu’s efforts in revamping the economy.

“We will be showcasing four playbooks on President Tinubu’s efforts in re-engineering the Nigerian economy.

“We will present our solid minerals sector, climate sustainability, agriculture, creative and digital sectors to investors from all over the world,” she said.

A firefight in the Amazon between rival leftist rebel groups in Colombia has left 27 people dead, an army source told AFP Sunday.

Both groups broke away from the once-powerful FARC guerrilla army when it signed a peace accord with the government in 2016 after decades of combat.

Now these dissident splinter groups are fighting each other in the Guaviare region of the Amazon as they seek control of drug trafficking routes, illegal mining, and extortion operations.

The recent fighting pitted rebels under a leader named Ivan Mordisco, Colombia’s most wanted man, and another who goes by the nom de guerre Calarca.

Army sources said the death toll was preliminary.

The army said Saturday on X that the combat was mainly about control of territory.

A video that the army shared with AFP shows more than 20 bodies in combat fatigues lying on a dirt road.

Mordisco held peace talks with the government of leftist President Gustavo Petro but dropped out in 2024 and has since stepped up attacks on civilians and security forces.

The forces led by Calarca have also held intermittent peace talks with the government.

With elections four months away and the opposition accusing him of being soft, Petro has increased pressure on rebel groups.

In November, government forces staged a major attack that left 19 Mordisco followers dead.

Petro has likened the elusive Mordisco to the late legendary cocaine baron Pablo Escobar.

Petro has clashed loudly of late with the United States over Venezuela as tensions grew between the two longstanding allies.

Petro traded harsh words with US President Donald Trump after the latter threatened to follow up on his ouster of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela with an attack to take out Petro.

But last week, the two leaders spoke and agreed to work together to fight drug trafficking.

Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, fresh from winning a seventh term at age 81, said Sunday that opposition politicians were “terrorists” who had tried to use violence to overturn the results.

Official results showed Museveni winning a landslide with 72 per cent from Thursday’s election, but the poll was criticised by African election observers and rights groups due to the heavy repression of the opposition and an internet blackout.

The whereabouts of opposition leader Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, who won 25 per cent, were still uncertain after he said on Saturday that he had escaped a police raid on his home and was in hiding.

Police denied the raid and said Wine was still at home, but blocked journalists from approaching the residence.

Wine has not posted on X since Saturday, when he denounced the “blatant theft of the presidential election”.

‘We Know What You Are Doing’

In his victory speech on Sunday, Museveni said Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), had planned to attack polling stations in areas where they were losing.

“Some of the opposition are wrong and also terrorists,” said Museveni, who has ruled the East African country since 1986, when he seized power at the head of a rebel army.

“They are working with some foreigners and some homosexual groups,” he said.

“All the traitors — this is free advice from me — stop everything, because we know what you are doing and you will not do it,” he added.

Although some internet was restored late Saturday, the government said it would maintain a ban on social media platforms until further notice.

The government blocked the internet two days before the vote, saying it was necessary to prevent “misinformation” and “incitement to violence”.

Uganda has remained largely peaceful since the results, though there were small-scale protests late Saturday, with AFP journalists saying tear gas was fired in parts of the capital Kampala.

The security presence was significantly reduced on Sunday, with people out on the streets and shops open.

Attacks Planned ‘Everywhere’

Analysts say the election was a formality, given Museveni’s total control over the state and security apparatus, though many Ugandans still praise him for bringing relative peace and prosperity.

He has taken no chances in trying to prevent the violent unrest that rocked neighbouring Tanzania during the polls in October.

The most serious reports of violence on election day came from the Butambala area of central Uganda, where an opposition lawmaker told AFP that security forces had killed at least 10 people at his home.

Museveni echoed the police account that the deaths resulted from a planned attack on a ballot-tallying centre and police station in the area.

He claimed the NUP had planned similar attacks “everywhere”.

Human Rights Watch accused the government of “brutal repression” of the opposition ahead of the vote.

Another key opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, who ran four times against Museveni, was abducted in Kenya in 2024 and brought back to a military court in Uganda for a treason trial that is ongoing.

African election observers, including a team from the African Union, said Saturday that “reports of intimidation, arrest and abductions” had “instilled fear and eroded public trust in the electoral process”.

Security Minister Luis Cordero gave the tolls for the blazes burning for two days now in the Nuble and Biobio regions, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) south of Santiago.

President Gabriel Boric earlier declared a state of emergency as crews battled flames fueled by gusting winds and hot weather in the southern hemisphere summer.

Nearly two dozen blazes are burning across the country, many of them in Nuble and Biobio.

“We face a complicated situation,” Interior Minister Alvaro Elizalde said.

The president announced the state of emergency in Nuble and Biobio in a post on the social media platform X.

“All resources are available,” Boric wrote. Among other things, the declaration means the armed forces will now get involved.

Alicia Cebrian, the director of the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response, said most of the evacuations were in the Biobio cities of Penco and Lirquen, which have a combined population of around 60,000 people.

Images broadcast by local television showed the flames in both cities, with charred cars in the streets.

Wildfires have severely impacted south-central Chile in recent years.

In February 2024, several fires broke out simultaneously near the city of Vina del Mar, northwest of Santiago, resulting in 138 deaths, according to the public prosecutor’s office.

About 16,000 people were affected by those fires, authorities said.

Heavy rains and storms have battered the two southern African countries for weeks, claiming more than 30 lives in South Africa’s northeastern Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.

Rivers burst their banks and swallowed entire neighbourhoods in several regions of Mozambique, displacing thousands, including a woman who was forced to give birth on a roof as she sheltered from flood waters.

“I classify the disaster as a national disaster,” the head of South Africa’s National Disaster Management Centre, Elias Sithole, said in a statement Sunday.

Authorities continued to search for survivors and recover bodies over the weekend, but flooding had started receding in some areas, including the famed Kruger National Park, which had been forced to close and evacuate guests on Thursday.

“Day visitation to the park will resume as of tomorrow,” South African National Parks announced on social media, still urging visitors to “exercise caution”.

Baby Born On Roof

In Mozambique, rescue efforts were slow to reach survivors who sheltered on roofs and in trees.

At least eight people had died in the country since December 21, according to official data, but numbers were expected to rise as more people were declared missing.

A resident of Gaza province, north of Maputo, Chauna Macuacua, told AFP that her sister-in-law had given birth on a roof where the family was waiting to be rescued since Thursday.

“We’ve been here for 4 days. My nephew was born yesterday around 11 PM (2100 GMT), and we still haven’t had any rescue or assistance for the baby and mother,” she said.

Wilker Dias, the director of a civil society group called Plataforma Decide, said he had received reports of several people missing.

“I think the number of dead will increase in the next hours,” he told AFP.

South Africa also dispatched rescue teams to southern Mozambique on Sunday after a car carrying five members of a South African mayoral delegation was swept away by floodwaters in Chokwe, 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of Maputo.

According to the latest figures released by the Mozambican government on Friday, more than 173,000 people had been affected by the floods across the country.

The accident occurred when a truck conveying bags of flour reportedly lost control and rammed into several vehicles, including commercial buses, on the busy highway.

The impact also affected a Toyota Corolla that had been parked on the bridge due to a flat tyre, injuring its driver.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were deployed to the scene to manage traffic and carry out rescue operations.

Confirming the incident in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, LASTMA said the crash involved a truck, a Toyota Corolla, a RAV4 SUV, and two fully loaded interstate buses.

It also stated that those injured were taken to a hospital.

“A multiple-vehicle crash involving a truck that fell on its side, a Corolla, an SUV (RAV4), and two loaded interstate Mazda buses has been reported on Kara Bridge inward Mowe. Police officers and our officials are on scene managing the situation,” the agency stated.

The accident caused severe traffic congestion on the expressway, leaving many motorists stranded for hours.

However, LASTMA later announced that partial recovery of the affected vehicles had been completed, easing traffic flow.

“Our men are on hand to ensure the safety of other motorists and road users while also ensuring smooth traffic flow in collaboration with the men of the FRSC,” the agency added.

Safety Concerns

The incident has once again raised concerns about safety on the Kara Bridge, which has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent times.

On October 30, 2025, at least six people, including a police officer, were killed in a separate crash involving multiple trucks, one of which was a fuel tanker.

The accident, which occurred on Wednesday night, involved some trucks, including a fuel tanker, that collided on the Kara bridge.

Eyewitnesses said one of the trucks carrying unknown items veered off the road and crashed into the brick barricade of the bridge.

The impact of the crash severed the head of the truck, causing it to plunge into the river.

One of the deceased, said to be an occupant of one of the trucks, was reportedly burnt beyond recognition.

That incident caused extensive damage and prolonged gridlock after one of the trucks plunged into the river following a collision with the bridge barricade.

Authorities are yet to release a full report on Sunday’s crash, including the exact number of casualties.
