Actress turned politician, Tonto Dikeh says she has never failed with leadership and therefore, believes she is capable of succeeding as Deputy Governor of Rivers State.

Dikeh made the comments on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics while speaking of her candidacy under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to her, contrary to speculations and despite her being a subject of controversy, the decision to join politics was well thought out and is one she has worked towards for at least three years.

“I am prepared for anything, truthfully. I have had three years to work on this, its not something that I just came out or emerged with. We’ve had a lot of time to work on this and for this. Criticism, I am ready, non-criticism I am ready. So, it doesn’t matter where the questions are coming from.

“I have failed in my life and I’m not denying that. Everyone has seen that.

“But am I going to fail with leadership. Have I failed in leadership? Start from motherhood, have I ever failed in motherhood, talk about my foundation. I think it was one of the foundations that stood up for this country, in the time of the pandemic, with no assistance whatsoever. I did even more than the government,” she said.

The ADC governorship candidate in Rivers state, Tonte Ibraye, had presented Dikeh as his running mate on Friday ahead of the 2023 elections.

Later the same day, the actress confirmed the nomination via her social media handles, where she shared what they hope to achieve if elected into office during next year’s election.

“I thank Mr Tonte Ibraye (@TonteIbraye), the Governorship candidate for ADC, Rivers State for nominating me as his running mate,” Dikeh tweeted.

“We are looking at investing in social protection, creating social value system & increased women’s inclusion in governance.”

Tonte Ibraye and Tonto Dikeh were later on Friday presented their Certificates of Return by the ADC party chairman, Ralph Okey Nwosu in Abuja.

South Korea’s Kim Min-kyu won the national title at the Korea Open Golf Championship on Sunday, clinching his first victory on home soil.

Kim claimed the title after a fierce battle, with the final round of the Asian Tour event at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan going to a playoff.

The 21-year-old headed into his penultimate hole tied in first place at five-under-par, but his drive veered left and out of the course.

The final round went to a three-hole aggregate playoff, sending Kim and Cho Min-gyu back to the 16th hole, with the pair vying for their first career titles.

Both Kim and Cho missed the green at the 18th, but while Cho missed his par putt, Kim slotted in his birdie putt to win the national title.

“To be honest, this is unreal,” Kim said. “I was tense but the results were really good. I feel amazing,” he told reporters.

Kim’s victory secures him a spot in the 150th Open at St. Andrews in Scotland from July 10 to 17 and 450,000,000 won ($349,000) in prize money.

The Korea Open has been held every year since 1958, but the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A trial began Sunday for an Egyptian man accused of stabbing a woman to death in a public street after she rejected his advances – a case that has sparked widespread outrage.

A video went viral last week appearing to show the victim, identified as student Nayera Ashraf, being stabbed by a young man outside her university.

The crime has triggered widespread anger both in Egypt and beyond, having been followed a few days later by a similar incident in which Jordanian student Iman Irshaid was shot dead on a university campus.

Social media users immediately drew comparisons between the two murders, decrying cases of femicide in the Arab world.

At the Mansoura Criminal Court, 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of Cairo, Mohamed Adel was accused of “premeditated murder”, after confessing to intentionally killing the victim, an AFP correspondent said.

Ashraf had previously reported the alleged perpetrator to the authorities, fearing that he would attack her, according to her father and witnesses.

The maximum penalty for murder is death in Egypt, which carried out the third highest number of executions in the world in 2021, according to Amnesty International.

“He stabbed her several times,” said the prosecution, which found “messages threatening to cut her throat” on the victim’s phone.

The next hearing is set for Tuesday, the defendant’s lawyer, Ahmed Hamad, told AFP.

In a rare occurrence among cases involving violence against women, authorities allowed television cameras to film the hearing on Sunday.

On social media, many Jordanian and Egyptian users called for the perpetrator to be sentenced to death, while others said men must “learn to take no for an answer”.

Egyptian preacher Mabrouk Attia sparked outrage last week after suggesting that the victim would not have met the same fate had she been veiled.

Nearly eight million Egyptian women were victims of violence committed by their partners or relatives, or by strangers in public spaces, according to a United Nations survey conducted in 2015.

The Edo State Police Command says it has killed two armed robbery suspects during a gun duel in Benin City on Sunday.

According to the command, it received information early on Sunday morning that a gang of armed robbers had invaded a filling station off Murtala Mohamed way, Benin City upon which the commander, Crack Team immediately mobilised a team of police operatives and vigilante to the scene.

The armed robbers were later successfully trailed to a different location where they were allegedly carrying out another armed robbery operation. On sighting the team of security operatives, the robbers were said to have opened fire on them which led to a gun duel.

In the process, the superior fire power of the security operatives hit two of the armed robbers while others escaped with various degrees of bullet injuries.

The two suspected armed robbers were reportedly taken to the Police Cottage hospital in Benin city where they were confirmed dead by the doctor and their bodies deposited at the mortuary.

Items recovered from them include; one locally made pistol and three live cartridges.

The Commissioner of Police Edo State Command CP Abutu Yaro fdc, therefore, directed that more effort be put into securing the arrest and prosecution of other fleeing members of the gang.

Russia said Sunday that its forces had carried out strikes against three military training centres in northern and western Ukraine, including one near the Polish border, just days before a NATO summit.

The bombings were carried out with “high-precision weapons of Russia’s aerospace forces and Kalibr missiles,” Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement.

Among the targets was a military training centre for Ukrainian forces in the Starychi district of the Lviv region, around 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the border with NATO member Poland.

The other two training centres were in the central Zhytomyr region and northern Chernihiv region.

Konashenkov did not say when or from where the missiles were fired.

However Kyiv on Saturday said that Russia had carried out strikes from Ukraine’s northern neighbour Belarus. Moscow did not comment on the claim.

After the strikes, several Ukrainian brigades “completely lost their combat capabilities,” Konashenkov said, adding that “plans to deploy them in combat zones were thwarted”.

The strikes served as a reminder that Russia is capable of striking any part of Ukraine, even with the bulk of its operation now taking place in the east and south of the country.

Ukrainian authorities reported that there were Russian strikes on the capital Kyiv on Sunday morning, but Konashenkov did not mention it in his statement.

The Russian strikes come as a G7 summit opened in Germany on Sunday, and ahead of a NATO meeting in Madrid from June 28 to 30.

President Joe Biden on Sunday described Russia’s latest bombing of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv as “barbarism” at the G7 summit in Germany.

“It’s more of their barbarism,” Biden told reporters at the summit site in the German Alps, when asked for his reaction to the Russian missile strikes against a residential building.

The Zamfara State Government has directed residents of the state to obtain guns in order to defend themselves against bandits who appear to be ravaging the state.

The directive was contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Information Mr. Ibrahim Dosara on Saturday.

According the government, the measure became necessary following the deteriorating security situation in parts of the state.

“Government has henceforth, directed individuals to prepare and obtain guns to defend themselves against the bandits, as government has directed the state commissioner of police to issue license to all those who qualify and are wishing to obtain such guns to defend themselves,” the statement partly read.

The commissioner further noted that the government has already concluded arrangements to distribute 500 forms to each of the 19 emirates in the state for those willing to obtain the guns.

Dosara asked those who are qualified and willing to own guns to reach out to the state Commissioner of Police and obtain gun licenses after satisfying the necessary criteria.

Beyond obtaining guns, the state government has also ordered for the recruitment of 200 additional Community Protection Guards in each of the 19 emirates of the state.

Additionally, Governor Mohammed Matawalle has ordered that all markets within the Mada, Wonaka, and Ruwan Bore Districts of Gusau local government, as well as Yansoto emirate in Tsafe local government area be shut, while motorcycle operations have been banned.

SPECIAL GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT.

Following increase in the activities of bandits in various parts of the state and the government commitment to ensure adequate security and protection of lives and property of the citizenry in the state, particularly during this rainy season, government has resolved to take further measures to deal with the recent escalating attacks, kidnapping and the criminal levies being enforced on our innocent communities.

This act of terrorism has been a source of worry and concern to the people and government of the state. Therefore, in order to deal decisively with the situation in our respective communities, government has no option than to take the following measures:

A. Government has henceforth, directed individuals to prepare and obtain guns to defend themselves against the bandits, as government has directed the state commissioner of police to issue license to all those who qualify and are wishing to obtain such guns to defend themselves. Government is ready to facilitate people, especially our farmers to secure basic weapons for defending themselves. Government has already concluded arrangement to distribute 500 forms to each of the 19 Emirates in the state for those willing to obtain guns to defend themselves.

B. People must apply from the Commissioner of Police, license to own guns and such other basic weapons to be used in defending themselves.

C. A secretariat or centre will be established for the collection of intelligence on the activities of informants.

D. people are strictly warned and advised to make sure that any information or intelligence about an informant must be true and nothing but the truth, as all information on such informants must carry correct data on the suspects, including their pictures, correct names, address, occupation and witness to testify the genuity of the information given, as government is taking punitive measures against any one found as informant. Any person who give wrong information against anybody, will be served the same punishment with an informant and will be treated as such.

E. Government has requested the state House of Assembly to pass, as matter of urgency, the informants bill before it, to enable government take the drastic measures on informants as contained in the bill.

F. Government has ordered for the recruitment of 200 additional Community Protection Guards in each of the 19 emirates of the state, making it 500 per emirate, to increase their manpower and strengthen its force and capacity to deal with the bandits.
To further ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of these measures, as well the proper implementation of these measures, government has also decided as follows:

In addition this, government has equally banned riding of motorbikes and selling of petroleum products in Mada, Wonaka and Ruwan Bore districts, as well as Yandoto emirate.

Henceforth, all filling stations on the affected areas are hereby closed with immediate effect. Anybody found riding motorbike within the areas is considered as bandits and security agencies are thereby directed to shoot such persons at sight. Security agencies are by this announcement directed to ensure strict compliance. Anybody found violating this order should be dealt with according to the rule of law. Government would not condone any act where innocent people are being killed.

Government is also using this medium to thank all those who honoured and respect the peace dialogue in what ever form. In the same vein, those who refused to honour and respect the peace dialogue are here by warned to allow peace within our respective communities. Government is hereby directing the military, police, civil defence and other security agencies to mobilise their operatives and take fight to the enclaves of the criminals with immediate effect.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson showed interest in France’s idea of creating a wider European political community beyond the EU during talks between the two countries’ leaders on Sunday, the French presidency said.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron saw “lots of enthusiasm” from his British counterpart who oversaw his country leaving the EU, when he spoke about the idea, a spokesman said.

The broader community could allow Britain to “reengage” with the bloc, he added.

Residents of Mada district under Gusau Local Government have fled their homes following fresh attacks by bandits.

The latest attacks in Mada and surrounding villages started on Thursday when the bandits killed one local vigilante and abducted about seven people.

On Friday, the bandits launched another attack on the same Mada Community at about 5:00 pm, fired heavy gun-shots at the residents and abducted three others.

Later that same day, the gunmen attacked Gidan Bangi community of Ruwan-bore under Mada district and killed 12 people.

The incessant attacks resulted in several residents fleeing their homes to safer communities like Kwatarkwashi.

According to one of the residents of the community, members of the affected communities had planned to protest as a result of series of attacks but the planned protest was disrupted by the security agencies.

Efforts to speak with the spokesperson of the state Police command, SP Mohammed Shehu were not successful as he did not respond to several phone calls put across to him.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to curb the rising trend of insecurity within the state and environs, the government has directed residents to obtain guns in order to defend themselves against bandits who appear to be ravaging the state.

The directive was contained in a statement by the Zamfara Commissioner for Information Mr. Ibrahim Dosara on Saturday.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari “over his failure to probe allegations that over N11 trillion meant to provide regular electricity supply since 1999 may have been stolen, mismanaged or diverted into private pockets.”

In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1119/2022 filed last week at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP is seeking “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Buhari to investigate how over N11 trillion meant to provide regular electricity supply has been allegedly squandered by governments since 1999.”

The electricity grid has reportedly collapsed at least three times within five months, and 130 times in 7 years, plunging many households across the country into darkness.

According to the World Bank, epileptic power supply costs businesses in Nigeria about $29 billion yearly.
