Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his role as the leader of the coastal state, pledging to uphold peace and security and not support any action that could threaten public safety.

Fubara gave the assurance on Saturday while speaking as a special guest at the finals of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament, held in the state capital.

He emphasised that protecting lives and property remains a top priority and reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his promises to the people of Rivers State.

“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” he said.

The governor expressed satisfaction that the week-long tournament was conducted without any incidents, describing the peaceful atmosphere as proof that Rivers State is safe for residents, visitors, and investors.

“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he added.

However, Governor Fubara expressed disappointment over the recurring political crises in the state, noting that they have coincided with the annual polo tournament over the past three years.

“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter,” he lamented.

Despite these challenges, the governor assured that his administration would continue to discharge its responsibilities and support individuals and groups genuinely committed to the progress of Rivers State.

He also pledged that the state government would work to upgrade the Port Harcourt Polo Club, widely regarded as having one of the best natural grass polo pitches in the country.

Governor Fubara encouraged guests and polo players, including foreign participants, to enjoy the serenity of Port Harcourt and to counter negative narratives about the state by sharing positive and accurate information.

Dignitaries at the final match included the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, alongside polo players from across the country, with teams from India and Argentina participating in the week-long tournament.

Harry Kane scored his 21st goal of the Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich came from behind to win 5-1 at RB Leipzig on Saturday.

The victory restores Bayern’s 11-point lead atop the ladder over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, while continuing their record-breaking campaign.

Unbeaten Bayern have dropped just four points on their way to a record-equalling tally of 50 after 18 games. Bayern’s total of 71 goals scored is also a record at this stage of a German league season.

Leipzig took a first-half lead through Romulo, but Bayern kicked into gear after the break, Serge Gnabry, Kane, Jonathan Tah, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Michael Olise all scoring.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said Leipzig were “twice as good as we were” in the opening half, adding “but in the second-half — my god, the boys delivered.

“We weren’t afraid and we really went for it.”

Leipzig goalscorer Romulo said “we played 75 minutes really on top, then I don’t know what happened, we turned off our minds. We have to learn something out of that.”

Leipzig were strong early and broke through after 20 minutes when Romulo snuck past Bayern’s Tah to poke in an Antonio Nusa pass from close range.

The hosts were undone in the simplest fashion just after half-time. Dayot Upamecano picked Christoph Baumgartner’s pocket and fed Gnabry, who guided the ball into the bottom corner.

Bayern took the lead after 67 minutes, once again thanks to a Leipzig mistake.

Olise’s floated cross looked harmless until Ridle Baku lost his footing, allowing an unmarked Kane time and space to blast home.

With Leipzig’s resistance broken, Tah, Pavlovic and Olise all scored in the final 10 minutes, while Jamal Musiala returned late off the bench after a six-month injury absence.

Can Rescues Dortmund

Earlier, an Emre Can penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time saved Borussia Dortmund’s blushes in a 3-2 home win against lowly St Pauli.

In the dying moments, VAR found a foul on Germany forward Maximilian Beier, bringing Dortmund captain Can to the spot.

“What a rollercoaster ride,” Can told Sky Germany.

“We need to do much better to settle things down and to convert our chances,” he added.

The hosts overcame a poor first half when Julian Brandt tapped in from close range just before the break. Having created the opener, Karim Adeyemi gave Dortmund a two-goal buffer in the 54th minute, converting a Fabio Silva assist.

Rock-bottom St Pauli had won just once since September but fought back into the game when James Sands and Ricky-Jade Jones scored inside 10 minutes midway through the second half to stun the hosts.

Deep into stoppage time, Jones caught Beier on the edge of the penalty area, allowing Can to convert nervelessly from the spot.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim’s Wouter Burger scored the only goal in a 1-0 home win over flailing Bayer Leverkusen to climb past Leipzig into third in the table.

Burger swung in an excellent free-kick after nine minutes to give the hosts the three points.

“That was an important one,” Burger said of his free-kick. “I was practising them a bit this morning.”

Relegation candidates last season, Hoffenheim are on track to qualify for Europe’s top competition for just the second time in their history, having last done so under now-Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann in 2017/18.

Leverkusen have now lost four of their past six, falling three points behind the Champions League placings.

Cologne beat Mainz 2-1 at home, Wolfsburg played out a 1-1 home draw with Heidenheim and hosts Hamburg were held to a scoreless draw by Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Milan’s menswear fashion week began on Friday, with very wintry, sporty shows from Ralph Lauren and Dsquared2.

Ralph Lauren marked his return to Milan after a 24-year absence with symbols of American elegance, from formal suits and tweeds, toughened up with boots and cowboy boots, in front of celebrities including actors Liam Hemsworth and Tony Leung Ka-fai.

The American designer also looked ahead to the Winter Olympics that begin on February 6 in the Italian city, and where he is dressing the US team, with nods to winter in Aspen, featuring patterned jumpers and a blue ski suit cinched with turquoise.

Dsquared2 also presented for autumn-winter 2026-27 an army of holidaymakers shod in provocative footwear.

Puffer jackets cut like dresses and huge parkas topped with XXL fake fur hats completed the look of the “hot as ice” team, as one jumper had it.

Canadian actor Hudson Williams, star of the television series “Heated Rivalry” in which he plays a professional ice hockey player, opened the show for Dsquared2.

Armani’s sports brand EA7, Italian label K-Way and Chinese sports giant Li-Ning, sponsor of its national team, have also planned Alpine-themed events before the Milan-Cortina Winter Games.

Earlier on Friday, designer Alessandro Sartori invited buyers and journalists into Zegna’s personal wardrobe, with structured jackets paired with flowing trousers in natural green and terracotta, and innovative fabrics.

“He’s created a wardrobe that puts down roots in the past but looks to the future,” the head of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, Carlo Capasa, told AFP.

He called it an example of “the trend towards a return to basics, to craftsmanship, to tailoring” and a positive sign at a time when Italian fashion is in crisis.

In menswear, the turnover of Italian companies fell in 2025 by 2.1 percent year-on-year, to 11.2 billion euros ($13 billion), according to the employers’ federation Confindustria Moda.

Every category is down, apart from leather garments, in a sector that represents 19.3 per cent of Italy’s textile economy.

Exports, mainly to destinations such as France, Germany and the United States, have fallen two per cent while imports are up 2.8 per cent.

China is buying less, but the Italians are “working on new markets”, said Capasa.

“Welcome to Mercosur (the four Latin American countries with which the EU has recently secured a free trade deal), to the Middle East, which is growing, and also to the first Indian buyers,” he added.

‘New Colours’

The Giorgio Armani show is scheduled for Monday in its historic workshops in the heart of Milan’s fashion quarter.

Even though his partner and collaborator Leo Dell’Orco was already in charge of the menswear collections, this will be the first show without the supervision of the indefatigable founder, who died in September last year, aged 91.

Dell’Orco has indicated that there will be “continuity, with bright touches”.

“We allowed ourselves take a few liberties, we have looked again at sizes, some new colours, fabrics with changing shades, as symbols of a change, with the utmost respect,” he said in an interview with the Corriere della Sera on Friday.

Milan show regulars Prada and Dolce & Gabbana are scheduled over the weekend, while British designer Paul Smith is making a comeback after a first menswear show in June last year.

Lautaro Martinez fired Inter Milan six points clear at the top of Serie A with the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Udinese, as Napoli responded to the pressure by beating Sassuolo 1-0.

Martinez expertly poked home the winner in the 20th minute in Udine to continue Inter’s nine-match unbeaten run in Italy’s top flight ahead of Tuesday’s key Champions League clash with Arsenal.

Inter were the better team from start to finish, putting pressure on Udinese high up the pitch as Cristian Chivu wants his team to do.

“What we’re displaying on the pitch is a testament to the desire of these players, because it’s not easy to change habits,” Chivu told DAZN.

“We defend high up the pitch and we start with pressure from the forwards and it comes from their work, the desire for our midfielders to win duels and from the courage of our defenders in maintaining a high line.”

Inter have collected 25 points from a possible 27 since losing the Milan derby in late November and again showed a ruthlessness in dealing with the smaller sides that both AC Milan and Napoli have lacked.

Milan have dropped a host of points to teams they should beat, starting back in August against Jamie Vardy’s Cremonese, who remain the only team to take three points off Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

Inter, meanwhile, have the opposite problem, with a poor track record in matches against high-profile opposition, a weakness which will be tested by Premier League leaders Arsenal at the San Siro.

Four straight wins at the start of the league phase of the Champions League were followed up by two defeats which have left direct qualification for the last 16 in doubt.

Napoli stayed six points behind Inter in third after Stanislav Lobotka’s first club goal in over three years snapped a run of three straight draws.

Napoli Struggle On

Slovakia midfielder Lobotka smashed home on the rebound in the seventh minute in Naples, breaking a scoring duck which stretched back to the opening day of Napoli’s triumphant 2022/23 season. It decided what was otherwise an even contest.

The champions are level on 43 points with second-placed Milan, who host Lecce on Sunday.

They trail their local rivals Inter even though the seven-time European champions have not lost since the opening day of the season.

Antonio Conte’s Napoli next travel to Denmark to take on FC Copenhagen in a match which will be crucial to their fate in the Champions League, with both teams at risk of falling into the elimination places.

And an already injury-stricken team missing kep players Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre-Frank Anguissa might be without three more players as Eljif Elmas, Amir Rrahmani and Matteo Politano all suffered knocks.

Conte was shown expressing his frustration in the stands when Politano went down late on holding his hamstring after taking a snap shot, and the Italy attacker need treatment on the field immediately after the final whistle.

“We’ll know more in the coming days. Elmas’ head was spinning a bit due to the flu, apart from that we don’t have any news,” said Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini.

“The boys were great in spite of the difficulty (with injuries), which we don’t how long will last.”

Juventus, in fourth, trail Inter by 10 points but have been improving under Luciano Spalletti of late and are heavy favourites to win at Cagliari in Saturday’s late match.

Tragedy struck Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano on Friday after seven members of a family were killed in what police believe was a housebreak attack.

The victims were identified as 35-year-old Fatima Abubakar and her six children.

They were reportedly attacked by unknown assailants who broke into their residence at about 12:10 p.m. and used dangerous weapons, inflicting fatal injuries on all of them.

The Kano State Police Command said it received a distress call shortly after the attack and immediately deployed operatives to the scene.

In a statement, the command disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, upon receiving the report, swiftly mobilised a police team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Lawal Mani, to the crime scene.

According to the police, the victims were evacuated and rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.

“The bodies were immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, they were pronounced dead by doctors,” the statement said.

Bakori has ordered an intensive investigation into the killings and directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday escalated his quest to acquire Greenland, threatening multiple European nations with tariffs of up to 25 per cent until his purchase of the Danish territory is achieved.

Trump’s threats came as thousands of people protested in the capital of Greenland against his wish to acquire the mineral-rich island at the gateway to the Arctic.

Thousands more protested in Copenhagen and other Danish cities.

The US president aimed his ire at Denmark, a fellow NATO member, as well as several European countries that have deployed troops in recent days to the vast autonomous territory with a population of 57,000.

If realised, Trump’s threats against Washington’s NATO partners would create unprecedented tension within the alliance.

From February 1, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would be subject to a 10-per cent tariff on all goods sent to the United States, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social network.

“On June 1st, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%. This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” he wrote.

“These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable.

“Therefore, it is imperative that, in order to protect Global Peace and Security, strong measures be taken so that this potentially perilous situation ends quickly and without question,” Trump said.

Trump added that he was “immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries.”

‘Make America Go Away’

In Nuuk, thousands of people, including the territory’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, waved Greenlandic flags, chanted slogans and sang traditional Inuit songs under light rain.

Many wore caps with the words “Make America Go Away”, a riff on Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

“We don’t want Trump invading Greenland; that is the message,” 44-year-old nurse Paarniq Larsen Strum said at the Nuuk rally, calling the situation “nerve-wracking”.

“We demand respect for our country’s right to self-determination and for us as a people,” added protest organiser Avijaja Rosing-Olsen.

In Copenhagen, charity worker Kirsten Hjoernholm, 52, said it was important to show unity with Greenlanders.

“You cannot be bullied by an ally. It’s about international law,” she said.

Around her, demonstrators waved the flags of Denmark and Greenland while chanting “Kalaallit Nunaat!” — the vast Arctic island’s name in Greenlandic.

Some also held placards saying “USA already has too much ICE,” referring to Trump’s deployment of federal immigration officers in US cities, while others chanted “Greenland is not for sale.”

US ‘Security’ Claims

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States needs Greenland for US “national security.” He also claims that Denmark is incapable of ensuring the territory’s security, notably from China and Russia.

France said the military exercise in Greenland was designed to show the world that they will defend the territory.

Denmark said the US had been invited to join the drill.

It was not immediately clear what authority the US president would invoke to impose the threatened tariffs of up to 25 per cent.

Since returning to the presidency, Trump has unleashed sweeping tariffs on goods from virtually all trading partners to address what Washington says are unfair trade practices and as a tool to press governments on US concerns.

Washington and the European Union struck a deal last summer to lower US tariffs on key European goods, with the deal currently being implemented.

Also on Saturday, a delegation of US lawmakers was wrapping up a visit to Copenhagen for talks with Greenlandic and Danish politicians.

The group, led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, told reporters that Trump’s stance was misguided and not backed by the majority of Americans.

It is also roundly rejected by Greenlanders, 85 per cent of whom — according to the latest poll published in January 2025 — oppose the territory joining the United States. Only six per cent were in favour.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after participating, alongside members of his cabinet, in the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW2026).

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

On the sidelines of the summit, Nigeria signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a move aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

According to the statement, the agreement is designed to deepen economic cooperation, boost bilateral trade and investment, promote technology transfer, and expand collaboration across key sectors, including energy, infrastructure, agriculture, mining and renewable energy.

During his address at the summit, President Tinubu announced that Nigeria and the UAE will jointly host an INVESTOPIA forum in Lagos in February.

The initiative is expected to attract global investors and position Nigeria as a key destination for sustainable and long-term investments.

The President also told participants that Nigeria is targeting the mobilisation of up to $30 billion annually in climate and green industrial finance.

He said the funds would support the country’s ongoing energy transition reforms and efforts to expand electricity access nationwide.

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week is a global platform that brings together leaders from government, business and civil society to advance sustainable development and climate action.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, said Nigeria’s trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will provide local exporters with a strategic platform to access global markets, particularly across the Gulf region and beyond.

Oduwole made the remarks on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, following the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Nigeria and the UAE.

According to the minister, the agreement allows more than 7,000 Nigerian product lines to enter the UAE market duty-free, significantly improving the competitiveness of local goods.

“Over 7,000 product lines, ranging from pharmaceuticals and chemicals to agricultural produce, will be allowed into the UAE market duty-free. We really want Nigerian businesses to take advantage of that,” she said.

She explained that the UAE was deliberately selected as a trade partner because of its strategic position as a global commercial hub and its extensive connectivity to international markets.

A camp in the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has faulted the Rivers State House of Assembly for proceeding with impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that the action could destabilise both the party and the state.

In a press statement issued on Friday, and signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC said it had reviewed the developments at the Assembly and expressed concern over what it described as a “choreographed legislative coup d’état”.

“We have painstakingly analysed the issues leading up to the latest step taken today by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by electing to proceed with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Odu.

“Regrettably, we note that honourable members who trumpeted loyalty to our party and Mr President can give themselves to the unfolding choreographed legislative coup d’état against the collective interest, growth, and development of our party in the state,” the statement said.

The party warned that Rivers State could not afford actions that threaten political stability, accusing some lawmakers, including APC members, of acting against the party’s interests.

It added that although the Assembly has constitutional powers to begin impeachment, the process remains largely subjective, as what qualifies as “gross misconduct” under Section 188 is open to political interpretation by lawmakers.

“Thus, no matter how beautifully crafted the allegations against the Governor and his Deputy are, they are still very subjective in the court of public opinion,” the statement added.

The APC cautioned that the path chosen by the Assembly could have long-term consequences for the party’s health and survival in Rivers State, describing the development as a dangerous precedent.

“This unfortunate path chosen by the legislative arm, therefore, serves as a dangerous footnote to the health and survival of the APC in Rivers State,” it said.

The party also called on the Chief Judge of Rivers State to comply with an interim injunction, which restrains him from receiving or acting on resolutions from the House of Assembly relating to the impeachment process.

“Meanwhile, we call on the Honourable Chief Judge of Rivers State to respect yesterday’s interim injunction in Suit No. OYHC/7/CS/2026 that restrained him from receiving or acting on the resolutions of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the statement said.

It further appealed to the national leadership of the APC to urgently intervene by activating internal mechanisms available to the National Working Committee under Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s 2022 Constitution (as amended).

“Finally, we call on the national leadership of the party to immediately activate internal mechanisms available to the National Working Committee under Article 21(b)(iii) of the 2022 Constitution (as amended) to save our dear party from an embarrassing situation,” it added.

Wizkid and Asake have reunited to release ‘Jogodo’, the lead single from their upcoming joint EP, ‘REAL,’ Vol. 1.

The surprise drop on Friday has already set the tone for what promises to be one of 2026’s biggest Afrobeats collaborations.

The four-track EP is due on January 23.

The EP, produced under Starboy Entertainment Ltd., GIRAN Republic and EMPIRE, includes ‘Turbulence’, ‘Jogodo’, ‘Iskolodo’ and ‘Alaye’.

Wizkid, speaking about the collaboration, said, “Working on this record with Asake came naturally. We speak the same musical language.”

Asake added, “When Wizkid and I collaborate, it feels special because it’s coming from a real place of friendship, mutual respect, and love for our culture.”

Fans have long been waiting for a full project from the pair, following their Grammy-nominated hit ‘MMS’ from Asake’s 2024 album Lungu Boy, and other collaborations like ‘Bad Girl’ and ‘Getting Paid’.

Teasers for REAL, Vol. 1 began circulating in late 2025 during an Apple Music takeover.

Wizkid confirmed the EP details on Facebook, sharing the cover art as a symbol of their bond.

Asake described the project as “real people in one room. Genuine people, heart-to-heart conversation every time.”

Jogodo has already broken records. It debuted at number one on Spotify Nigeria with 1.388 million streams, a new national record for a collaborative release.

Globally, it entered Spotify at number 82 with 1.852 million streams, and it topped Nigeria’s Apple Music, YouTube, Audiomack and Deezer charts.

The track also entered the UK Apple Music Top 50 at number 49 and is charting in more than 30 countries.

The song has gained traction with minimal social media promotion. Fans have taken to platforms to praise the track, calling it a “collaboration of the year” and singling out Asake’s verse.

With Jogodo already topping charts and trending online, expectations for REAL, Vol. 1 are high, suggesting the EP could become one of Afrobeats’ defining projects of 2026.
