The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has reiterated the commission’s determination to conduct transparent and credible elections in 2027, disclosing that groundwork is already being laid to further strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Amupitan gave the assurance in his 2026 New Year address to INEC staff across the country, where he described the year ahead as a period of renewal and an important phase for reinforcing the commission’s internal systems ahead of the next general elections.

Reviewing INEC’s activities in 2025, the chairman applauded the dedication and professionalism of staff, citing the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which was held shortly after he assumed office on October 23.

According to him, the outcome of the exercise reinforced public confidence in the electoral process and demonstrated that the commission remains capable of protecting democratic values.

Looking ahead, Amupitan said 2026 would be both demanding and eventful, noting that INEC must intensify preparations for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for February, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. He added that preparations for the 2027 general elections remain a top priority for the commission.

The INEC chairman also reaffirmed his commitment to staff welfare, pledging to continue building a work environment anchored on fairness, discipline, and mutual respect. He assured employees that their well-being would remain central to the commission’s priorities as it carries out its constitutional mandate.

Amupitan urged staff to remain resolute in upholding the integrity of the electoral system, stressing that the collective effort of INEC personnel is essential to building a commission that commands the trust of Nigerians and guarantees that every eligible voter is able to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.
